But most SME owners I speak with are not asking big futuristic questions.

They are asking very practical ones.

“Will this save my team time?”

“Will this reduce mistakes?”

“Will this help me hire faster?”

“Will this make payroll or approvals less painful?”

That is where AI starts to become real.

Not in a keynote.

Not in a strategy deck.

But in the annoying, repetitive work that quietly eats up hours every week.

A delayed approval.

A payroll input that needs checking again.

A claim that goes back and forth.

A candidate shortlist that takes too long.

A report someone has to prepare manually before a meeting.

None of these feel dramatic on their own.

But together, they cost businesses a lot more than we admit.

So when people ask where AI creates the fastest ROI for SMEs, I do not think the answer is “everywhere”.

I think it starts where the friction is highest.

For some businesses, that may be payroll.

For others, approvals.

For fast-growing teams, maybe hiring.

For owners and managers, maybe reporting and visibility.

The interesting part is that AI does not need to replace anyone to create value.

Sometimes the value is simply:

less chasing, less checking, less waiting, less switching between tools, less time spent trying to find the right information.

That is real ROI.

And maybe the first wave of AI adoption for SMEs will not be about doing something completely new.

Maybe it will be about making the everyday work less painful.
